Is it legal for junior high schools in NY to suddenly add a mandatory after school program?

This program is mandatory, even if you have after schools you have signed up and payed for already. Do they really have a right to do this? This is happening in my little brother's junior high and he pleaded for me to help find the answer. It is mandatory no matter what your grades are. It is ~2 hours for 2 days each week. No if's, and's, or but's.

  1. it doesn't sound like it's legal but it very well may be legal . What is the course if it's because of grades that need to be better then yes it's legal but if it's just because they don't have time in the day then that's illegal
  2. Well, what kind of program is it? And how long does it last? Like in terms of number of days as well as how many hours is actually is. And yes, it is completely legal. And if it's only for 30-60 minutes after school, that's nothing! Just show up late for your after school thing with the rest of the kids. And if it's an important program, like something on the subject of health, dating issues, abuse, etc, then tell your brother to suck it up and deal with it. Although it doesn't seem fair that they just spring this on you. It would have made a lot more sense to send out a letter in the summer, explaining it and whatnot.
  3. I would check this out with someone on the school board. I don't believe a school can change a program in midstream like that and force people to comply.
